Recently I and two other students in my class started working on a news package about JUULing. JUULing is a major problem at our schools and we are hoping to cover all the facts about it. We have read articles written by health experts and students at other schools. We are also learning techniques to help us mask the identity of people we interview. Many of the people we will interview like to JUUL in private and would like their identity hidden. We are planning a slow release starting soon. PAX Labs wikipedia

This month I have been working on a project about Jaden Smith. I decided on him because some of his tweets over the years have been pretty funny. I also enjoyed how he was in a recent American anime, which the concept of made me laugh. The anime also started many meme, like the big Toblerone. I had some time difficulties, like how I original wanted to include interviews of others trying to decode his tweets. I didn't get to those interviews however because I only had a few weeks to work on the project. I was able to fill in the interview space by talking about some of his past tweets. If you would like to watch the video you can visit my video page here.
As many of you may know I have been taking a broadcast technology class this year. Sadly, today is my last day in the class. I would like to leave a review of the class before I go. I liked the freedom I was given on projects like the 6 word story. I didn't like projects where I had to follow a list and check things off, like the 30 unique shots project. Overall I enjoyed many of the projects, my favorite being 6 word story. I would have liked editing more because I enjoyed that part of video production. I am going to take broadcast 2 next semester because I am interested in learning more about video and I would like to do more editing.
Recently I have finished a news package that I have been working on for the past couple of weeks. I decided to make my video on cubing (the solving of rubik's cube puzzles in short amount of time.) I chose this topic because I have a friend who cubes as a large hobby and it fascinates the people around him. I had a few difficulties finding variety with my B-Roll so I decided to use shots from the subject's channel. Overall I enjoyed the project a lot and it was fun to see how a news package is put together. If you would like to see my new video you can go to my video page or watch it on school Tube by clicking here.
Our class has been continuing our interview unit and we are about to make a full length news story. To make sure we are ready to make a news package we watched stories by Steve Hartman and analyzed tactics he uses one of which is called hey, you, see, so. This tactic first, gets the audience's attention, (Hey) then it explains why it is relevant to the viewer, (you) and lastly, the tactic gives more of the story (see) and tells why it all matters (so). For example, in his story "Middle school football players execute life-changing play" they grab the audience's attention by describing an amazing play but not revealing what that play is. The reports then explain the play and details about it and mention the kindness involved giving the audience a personal connection. Lastly, they show a kid explaining how the play changed his life which shows the "so" or why it matters. In another one of his stories, called "Soul Food" he grabs the audience's attention by claiming that he randomly picked a person to interview and saying that the audience wouldn't believe what he found because it was to good to be true. The story covers a women's tradition of feeding her entire church on Sundays. The story goes into detail about her history and family. The story also describes her generosity to help the audience feel connected through her kindness. The tactic of Hey, You, See, So seems to be used frequently in media and I am excited to get to try it out myself.
Recently my class started a new unit about interview strategies. I learned a lot and wanted to share some of them with you. First of all, I learned not to ask yes or no questions and instead ask my subject to tell me about things. I also learned how to set up microphones. Lastly, I learned how to compose a shot for an interview. You want to put your subject in a third in the video and have the interviewer diagonal from them. You also want the shot set up so only the subjects shoulders and head show in the video. Lastly, I learned that as the camera operator to never look at the subject. The new unit has taught me a lot about interviews.
I have just got done with my new video for my six word story unit. I decided to write my story about originality as I currently feel like there is a lot of unoriginal content in the mainstream. I decided to make a drink that represents others ideas. I choose this idea because a water bottle can be littered and water can also be consumed without care. I choose to have the man who drinks the water later throw it in nature. I choose this because littering tends to be considered careless and I wanted the littering of the empty bottle to seem careless as well as put a negative feeling toward the man. I choose the color purple for the liquid because as my teacher taught me purple represents creativity and it also contrasts with the background. The man in the video is wearing a green shirt which I picked because green blends in with the background of nature like how certain content seems to blend in with everything else. I had two major issues while creating this project. My first one was that it was raining the day I made this project however, we decided to check the weather and find the perfect time to film. In the end, the darkness of the rain helped the atmosphere of the film. The other issue was I forgot to check out a tripod. This issue was not easily fixed as shown by some of the shots being shaky at times. I tried using certain techniques to keep the camera steady and I had to try multiple times for some of my shots that were hard to keep a steady camera for. Overall I enjoyed the project and the freedom it gave me.
Over the past couple days I have been working on a project called the 19 unique shots. In this project I practiced 19 of the most popular shots in famous movies. We are practicing for an upcoming project where we only get 6 shots to tell a whole story. For this upcoming project I will have to make every shot count so I searched for the most effective and my favorite shots. I found a few that I will definitely use in the future to share with you all. Dark voyeur- This shot was fun to film because I liked the the look of the fence. I also felt stealthy when I was filming it. Birds eye- I enjoyed this shot because I got to get to an elevated place and film. I liked looking down below and seeing how small everyone looked. Following shot- I enjoyed this shot because of how challenging it was to keep up with my subject throughout the entire shot. Maser establishing shot- Right when I went outside to film I noticed the track and felt it was perfect to help grab this shot. It was exciting to see a shot presented for me perfectly. contract dolly- This shot made the shot look more exciting. At first I thought the shot was strange and there is no use for it but later I learned how interesting it made certain shots look. I will use this shot in the future if I want to show action. Low Angle- I used this shot in my last WALLDO project and enjoyed the effect it had last time. The shot makes the subject look larger than they really are and helps the camera reach new angles. This shot is one of my favorites and I hope to use it in my Six Word Story project that is coming soon.
We have recently began a unit about 6 word stories and at the end we will write and film our own six word story video. The most famous six word story is Ernest Hemingway's “For sale: baby shoes, never worn.” When I first read the story I had assumed it was about a miscarriage. As I researched the topic further I found that I was not the only one with this theory however, others had interesting spins on the theory I hadn’t given much thought to. For example, one user had figured that the shoes were being sold by the father of the dead baby and the mother had died along with the baby. The user figured that if both the mother and father had survived they would have kept the shoes as a memory and sign of craftsmanship but if the mother died too the father may have sold them in an attempt to relieve pain. I decided to search further for a few other 6-word stories for inspiration and I found a couple that helped me out. Here are a few that I felt were funny: Selling Parachute: never opened, slightly stained. Virtual Friends, Best Friends. Meet? Awkward! Here is a link to the website where I found the new theory: www.quora.com/What-is-the-meaning-of-For-sale-baby-shoes-never-worn-attributed-to-Ernest-Hemingway
Hello everyone, I just got done learning how to use Final Cut Pro. I was able to learn this by getting a variety of shots across my school. For example, we got a wide shot of me shaking hands with my principal. After I got my footage, I uploaded it into my computer and began editing. My teacher taught me many valuable things about Final Cut Pro. I’ve used iMovie in the past which helped me greatly when learning this new program. In my opinion Final Cut Pro is strictly better than iMovie because it gives a lot more freedom. I enjoyed the scavenger hunt and I am glad I got to learn a new program that I love.
