For my final this semester I had difficulty coming up with ideas so I decided to use interesting camera angles to make my Tea making machine look epic. I had decided to use a story where I drop the cup of tea at the end as a way to conclude the story. I originally used a calm song that I had made in the video, however, I preferred the mood from an epic choir track I found on Sneak On The Lot. I wanted to show that the cup broke without actually breaking a cup so I made a sequence of shots showing me trip and then used a sound effects to imply that the cup broke. I had a lot of fun this semester and hope to continue making videos over the Summer. To watch my new video click here.

This month I have worked on an LHS News Minute. I collected B-roll of 4 different stories at Ladue including the chess team's victory, the photography club's art show, Cardinal's tickets for straight A students, and the Junior Varsity Tennis team at Ladue. I had minor difficulties with collecting B-roll for the Cardinals tickets, but after talking to a few of my friends I decided to film one of them collecting his tickets. The News Minute format was interesting because of the fast pace. I originally had made my Voice overs too short and had to later add more substance to them. My April project has not gone as expected. I was originally going to produce a video for Circle of Hope bracelets, however, our schedules didn't work out well. I had made a graphic and story board for the video, but, I am unable to make the video without missing a deadline. This month, I chose to make an LHS News Minute. I will be focusing on the chess team and several other activities going on at Ladue. I will be collecting B-roll and recording voice overs for the final project. It is disappointing that the original project did not work out, however, the News Minute will be a fun way to learn more about the school.
For my project this month I have been reporting on a petition made by students to convince Mr. White into using a smart board setting called creative pen. I had fun making use of my phone and being able to get footage easily. I had an interesting shift in my plans late in my project, because I was originally going to report on Mr. White's refusal to use the pen, however, late in the project he allegedly used the pen for a student's birthday. I used this shift as a turn in the story. Another difficulty I had was with the student I was interviewing being unable to interview due to prior commitments so I had to choose another student to interview. Mr. White denied the fact that he used the pen, however, I was able to get a picture of him using the pen, which he claims was me using photoshop. During my next project, I will make sure to use a microphone, because in Mr. White's interview there is a lot of background noise even after I placed the camera close to him. I will also make sure I am not seen in the reflection of anything, because I noticed after filming that I was in the reflection of one of my interviews. Finally, I will collect more relevant B-roll to the story. I filmed and edited the project on my iPhone, even though it was a fun experience, next time I will use standard equipment due to frustrations with iMovie and limited settings. I am currently working on a news package about a petition started to make Mr. White use a special setting, called creative pen, on his smart board. So far I have recorded some B-roll of Mr. White teaching in a batman costume and some shots of the petition along with my voiceovers for the intro and one for a transition going from student interviews to Mr. White's interview. I was going to focus on Mr. White's reluctancy to use the pen, however on February 27th, he used the pen to write a happy birthday message to Cassie. I spoke with Cassie and she sent me a picture of the Mr. White's writing and has agreed to do an interview. I sent emails to the 4 students who started the petition, however, they declined an interview. After Mr. White used creative pen I convinced him to do an interview after he previously declined to clear up the point that "he didn't cave into the demands of the petition". I currently need to get B-roll of Cassie in class and a reenactment of Mr. White's initial refusal to use the pen. I will also collect the interview of Mr. White and Cassie, which I have written questions for. I am going to try apple's "everyone can create video" project, so I will only be using my phone and iMovie to edit.
Recently, I have been retaking broadcast tech 2 to learn new media skills. So far I have worked on ProPrompter and getting a variety of shots to tell a story. I've worked on visiting different locations at my school and getting different camera angles. I ended up visiting the art room where I practiced taking steady and focused shots with my iPhone. I have also been working on the teleprompter for the upcoming Ladue View. I am working on fixing the script when there are errors and making sure the prompter is up to date. So far, the Laude View is coming together nicely and I am excited to see what the end product will be.
Broadcast tech has been a great class this year. I enjoyed how I was given creative freedom for all of my projects. This freedom gave me the ability to make many projects I am proud of. I did not like blogging after every video because, the blogging didn't feel necessary for all of my videos. My favorite project was my final because I didn't suffer writer's block and I had no issues during filming. I would have liked to have a notebook of video ideas so I didn't need to waste class time brain storming. I am taking broadcast tech next year because I am excited to expand my skills in the new studio. Overall, broadcast tech has changed the way I look at videos and I hope to learn more next year. I have been working on my final for all of May. I decided to try and make a visual essay because I thought that making a video with no words would be an interesting challenge. I asked my friend Orion, who is a photography student to help me film. I was required to use a mirror and thought that having my character look out a mirror the whole story as if it was a window could be interesting. I decided to not reveal the mirror until the middle of the story. I chose to have similarities between the shots with and without the mirror. One example is the empty couch, where I used a canted, birds-eye shot after the mirror is revealed.
My story features me, however, it is about people in general. I decided to make the story about people in general because everyone can relate and reflect. I chose to film in my house because there was a TV and a curtain. The curtain helped hide the window until the end, while the TV was used to play a show that helps show contrast when it is turned off. The video will hopefully provoke thought and reflection within the viewers. I had to move a lot of things out of the way before my filming, however, I found an old clock that I decided to use in the video to show how people are frequently worried about time. If you would like to view the video click here. April has been a very busy month for me. First, I finished the JUUL investigation with my group. You can watch the full video by clicking here. The project needed minor editing adjustments and new B-roll. I also started a news story about Ladue High School replacing the student iPads for computers. That project will likely be out by the end of the month.
This past month has been busy and exciting for me. I have continued my work investigating JUULing at my school. My team and I have finished all of our interviews and put out a teser trailer. We have also continued to get B-roll for the final product. Our final video will be out in the next month. If you would like to watch the trailer, click here.
